Learn New Things and Change Your View: Heavy Construction Equipment

Why Hire a Wheeled Crane for Your Construction Project?

by Nisanur Kronenberg

The use of mobile cranes by construction companies is prevalent in Australia. These cranes are a popular choice of heavy lifting equipment simply because of their mobility. If you are contemplating hiring a mobile commercial crane for a particular construction job, you should know that not all mobile cranes are created equal. All mobile cranes can be grouped into two versions — wheeled cranes and tracked cranes. Of the two types of mobile cranes, wheeled cranes are more commonly used.

Here are some reasons to hire a wheeled crane:

  1. It eliminates the need for heavy haulage. Both wheeled and tracked cranes can be easily moved from one location to another at the construction site without the need for labourious dismantling of the equipment. The key difference between the two types of cranes, however, is that wheeled cranes can be conveniently driven up to the job site, while their tracked counterparts will need to be transported to the site. Wheeled cranes, therefore, eliminate the hassle of arranging for heavy construction equipment haulage.
  2. It comes in a range of versatile options. Wheeled cranes are available in a number of sizes and styles, including truck-mounted cranes, rough-terrain cranes, and all-terrain cranes, so that you can hire a machine that matches your specific job requirements. Truck-mounted cranes are the most commonly used in commercial applications. Rough-terrain and all-terrain cranes are often used on off-road landscapes. Therefore, there is a proper crane for every job and every terrain.
  3. It is powerful. Wheeled cranes might not weigh as much as tower cranes or overhead cranes, but that does not necessarily imply that they are any less efficient. Wheeled cranes come in different load capacities so you can find a piece of equipment that can handle the weight loads you will need to lift and move at the construction site. By any means, do not consider the compact design of wheeled cranes to be a show of weakness.
  4. It reduces or eliminates setup time. Wheeled cranes can eliminate or significantly reduce setup time. Because the crane equipment itself is mobile, minimal to no time is spent getting it up and running.

Tracked cranes can deliver pretty much the same benefits that wheeled cranes offer. The only major challenge with tracked cranes is that they cannot be driven to the construction site. Therefore, there's no reason why your choice should be limited to any particular type of mobile crane.
