Factors to consider when selecting a mobile crane for your next project

by Nisanur Kronenberg

Mobile cranes have been a game changer in the construction industry because they have made it easier for more complex structures to be developed in areas that previously had very limited accessibility.

When looking to hire a mobile crane for your next project, there are several factors you should consider. The performance of the crane will be determined by its load bearing capacity, the terrain of the actual construction project, and type of load that will need to be lifted. Here are some of those factors explained in more detail.

The type of load and the capacity of the crane

The ability of a mobile crane to handle specific loads will determine how useful it is for the project. Mobile cranes have a specific lift capacity that is defined by the weight of the load and how far the load will have to be "swung" to reach its required destination. For example, loads that only need to be lifted very close to the mobile crane can be of a larger capacity than loads that need to be extended a certain distance from the body of the crane.

The nature of the load will also influence the ability of a particular crane to move it safely. Solid objects are typically less complicated to move than large containers full of a liquid. Liquids may require higher capacity cranes to safely handle the random flow of the liquid as the load is being shifted.

The outdoor terrain

The nature of the terrain on the construction site will also influence your choice of a mobile crane. Because mobile cranes are known for their flexibility and ability to access multiple areas, they tend to be suited for many different outdoor conditions.

When making your selection, consider the base of the crane in relation to the state of the ground. Grass and dirt surfaces may require a crane with a wide base to evenly spread the weight. Concrete surfaces may require a slip-resistant crane with a sturdy base.

The lift height

If your project will involve lifting loads high in the air, you will need a mobile crane that has multiple load-securing features. These include additional straps to hold the load in place, motion sensors to determine the load movement, and advanced controls on the navigation panel to manoeuvre the load with high efficiency.

Accessibility

As population pressure in Australian urban areas continues to rise, most construction projects are being done in areas with limited space and manoeuvrability. Therefore, you should consider hiring a mobile crane that can navigate tight spaces without compromising on load bearing capacity or core safety standards.
